Dr Debono's Thinking Hat Theory - Wiki Learning Experience

Debono's Thinking Hat Theory: Connecting Through Wiki

This week our E-Learning class was required to interact and engage in an online, collaborative wiki discussion. The discussion was in regards to the use of mobile phones in the classroom. In order to broaden our perspective and deepen our understanding on the topic, this activity utilised Dr DeBono’s Six Thinking Hat theory.

For those who are unaware, Dr Debono’s Six Thinking Hat theory  involves having a different coloured thinking hat attached to varying perspectives. The purpose of this theory is to scaffold the process of critically thinking and encourage one to undertake a process of exploring a topic through multiple angles. If you would like to learn more about Dr Debono’s Thinking Hat theory please view the following link; http://www.debonothinkingsystems.com/tools/6hats.htm

The scaffold was significantly effective in creating a discussion that encompassed varying perspectives and research on the topic. Through participating in this engagement activity we were required to use our higher order thinking skills as we critically analysed the array of discussion points put forward. Regardless if ones stance was altered; the use of a wiki and the DeBono's Thinking Hat theory created the opportunity to discuss and explore the topic with multiple individuals, contexts and perspectives. Therefore, the engagement activity enabled us, as learners to transform our understanding of the topic. We were able to excel beyond analysis as we both evaluated the perspectives of others and then continued to create a more enriched understanding and perspective on the topic.

The wiki created a learning experience that incorporated the learning theory; Connectivism. Through our wiki and blog we were and are able to connect with individuals, enhance our knowledge and resource base and ultimately continue to connect and enrich other’s learning experiences.

I think using a wiki is a fantastic tool to explore the viewpoints, knowledge and opinions of others who have varying contexts. It was very interesting to consider so many ideas, opinions and perspectives as so many fantastic viewpoints were shared on the topic. Even though I personally am a supporter of mobile phones in the classroom, those who were resistant to the idea contributed some significant points that I now know to both consider and attempt to create some solutions to the problems they anticipated. I really enjoyed the experience and appreciate the fact that the experience was not confined to the classroom because if you asked me on Monday afternoon in our new class… I would not of been willing to participate and engage to the extent that I have through the wiki !

Dr Debono’s Thinking Hat theory and the wiki experience were fantastic and I will most definitely add them to my tool box and utilize them in the Learning experiences I design for my future students.
